The ceiling is a blank canvas just waiting for your creativity. Countless intriguing designs have graced ceilings, and these five design suggestions will inspire you to make your home distinctive and your ceiling truly stand out.

Ready to get creative? Let’s dive into some ideas!

1. Coffered Ceilings

Coffered ceiling

You can master the coffered ceiling look by attaching pre-made beams to your ceiling in a grid pattern. Start by planning your grid on paper, measuring your ceiling to ensure precise and even spacing for the beams. Mark the grid pattern on the ceiling using chalk or a pencil. Attach furring strips, along the marked lines as a base for the beams. Cut the beams to fit within the grid and secure them to the furring strips with a nail gun or screws. Make sure the beams are firm and stable. Fill any gaps with wood filler. You can then paint the beams any color of your choice, or for a rustic look, stain the wood to highlight its natural texture. This will draw attention upwards and make your room feel cozier. With some careful planning and a bit of elbow grease, you’ll have a beautiful coffered ceiling that adds character and charm to your space.

2. Beadboard Ceiling

Putting beadboard panels on your ceiling is an inexpensive way to cover up popcorn ceilings and add interest to your view looking up! Beadboard panels come in all types of different styles, colors, and patterns. Creative use of trim to cover seams between the panels is a great way to keep everything looking purposeful and not as a random DIY project.

3. Wood Plank Ceiling

Wood planks on a ceiling gives the home warmth and a comforting feel. Pre-finishing the planks will make installation much easier, and all that will need to be done after attaching is to fill the nail holes with matching wood putty.

If you’re going for a rustic look, a darker stain will convey the appearance of age. If the home is on the shore, a whitewash that is thin enough to let the grain come through will give a driftwood look. If you’re going for a more modern look, painting the planks white would be the way to go! HGTV has a great explanation of how to put wood planks on the ceiling.

4. Add Beams to the Ceiling

Cathedral ceilings are especially dramatic when you incorporate wood beams that converge at the highest point. Even if you don’t have cathedral ceilings, adding beams that run straight across the room will add a stunning focal point. For an added flair, paint or stain the beams a color that complements the room’s design to complete the look.

5. Paint The Ceiling

If you don’t want to add any other details to your ceiling, a fresh coat of paint will do wonders. Not everyone has lovely plaster detailing on the ceiling like this home, but adding interesting crown molding will add interest to the room and will hide irregularities where the walls and ceiling meet. Painting the walls and ceiling the same color is a decorating statement that will set the mood of the room.  It’s easy enough for most people to do, and this project won’t take long at all.
