We find that many people are intimidated when it comes to measuring your window wells for new covers. They are concerned that they won’t do it right, so we are here to take away the mystery and confusion.
Tools and Equipment Needed for Accurate Measurement
Getting the measurements for window well cover sizes is easy. You don’t need special tools or equipment, you can get the right measurements with items found in most homes.
You will need a tape measure, a pencil, and have our measuring guide handy. Writing down the window well dimensions as you go helps to prevent mistakes, so printing out our measuring guide or having paper handy to jot things down makes it simple.
If you like, take a photo or two of your wells from a few feet away, especially if you have utilities, pipes, or other things near the area, and send it to us along with your information. Pictures do tell the whole story!
First, the basics!
You may have not had to measure anything since grade school, so here’s what you need to be concerned about–we need the measurements to the nearest ⅛” for manufacturing purposes. Obviously we enlarged the diagram so that the fractions are easier to read.

How to Measure Metal Window Wells

- Width (A): Measure across the widest point of the well from outside left side to outside right side at the foundation wall. Do not include the flanges that attach the well to the foundation wall.
- Projection (B): Measure from the foundation wall to the outer edge of the front of the well. If your window is recessed into the foundation wall, use a straight edge across the back of the well to measure from.
- If your window is above the well the height above (C & D): measure the distance from the top of the well to the top of the window frame on both the left and right sides.
- If the window is above the top of the well, please let us know what type of window you have, such as a slider, double hung, crank-out, or block, because it may affect the type of cover you need.
- Height above grade (H): measure the distance between the grade and the lip of the well.
