16-gauge steel, heavy-duty window wells are excellent for extra-deep and extra-wide basement egress installations. Thanks to their heavier gauge steel, these large window wells can withstand greater depths and widths with correct installation.
The wells over 44″ in depth, should be purchased with an egress ladder for IRC compliance for emergency escape.
This heavier weight steel aids in well stability for longevity and durability. Heavy duty window wells have warranties like our other wells–30 years for Galvanized and White, 10 years for Decorative Stone.
See the sizes available below. Custom wider and deeper wells are available, please contact your sales representative for more information.

The short answer is yes. Our heavy-duty window well series is created with IRC building codes in mind. Egress window wells are required in basement bedrooms by local building codes to provide emergency egress.
This is valid for every living space or bedroom you have in your basement. In this case, your window well should not only provide sufficient light and ventilation for your basement but also provide an escape route for a fully grown adult.
IRC building regulations for any window require ladders well that is over 44” inches deep from the gravel at the bottom of the well to the lip.
Hook-over ladders are recommended for our heavy-duty window wells. These are secured by hooks at the top lip of the well and bolted to the wall at the bottom of the well. They come in 3 to 8 steps – for wells with depth up to 96″.
Most building code regulations do not mandate covering the window well. However, when you have a large and deep window well, we recommend installing a heavy-duty window well cover for safety purposes, as the risk of injuries is significantly higher. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you combine your well with our low profile unbreakable window well cover or a sturdy aluminum grate.
Even though it is not required by code, many insurance companies are requiring homeowners to cover window wells to prevent liability problems from falls. The covers mentioned above are engineered to support 400 pounds, and the low profile Sloped and Flat covers have a lifetime warranty.
Just like our window well covers; our window wells are built to last and add value to your home.
