How to pick the right grate?
Metal grating is a terminology used to represent a wide assortment of fabricated metal products. The two most common types of grates are safety and bar metal grating. Let’s explore them:
Window Well Safety Grates
Safety grating is a type of metal grating used as a walking surface to improve traction and reduce the risk of slips and falls. Basement window security grates usually have small protrusions, commonly in a diamond shape.
Those types of metal grates help reduce the risk of slipping, and the high percentage of the open surface helps reduce the build-up of liquids or snow.
Carbon steel, galvanized steel, aluminum, and austenitic stainless steel are all common material types used to make safety grating.
Bar Grating
Bar grating consists of individual parallel metal bars that are joined together with vertical bars. They can have a variety of finishes and textures, and the spacing between the bars can also vary from application to application. Some typical uses of the bar grates are:
- Fire escapes
- Safety fences and gates
- Ventilation
- Trailer beds
So, which one is better for your needs? It’s simple.
If your grate is in a high traffic area, you will need a steel bar grate that will support up to 100 pounds per square foot. The bar grating will not flex when a person steps on.
If your grate is placed in a low traffic area, we recommend our Aluminum options. This cover will support 40 pounds per square foot and will flex slightly when stepped on. Furthermore, the Aluminum is a rust-free material. The grates are also lighter than the steel ones, easier to install and maintain.
