Residential-grade steel grates support up to 40 pounds per square foot. If your grate sits in a backyard, walkway, or other high-traffic area, a high-traffic or commercial-grade grate holds up to 100 pounds per square foot. Tell us where the grate will go, and we’ll recommend the right grade.
They are, depending on the size of the well being covered. Window wells that have a smaller opening than 36” x 36” are not code-compliant egress wells, so the cover for those wells does not need to be compliant. Our aluminum grates meet the egress code for most metal egress window wells because they are light enough to be moved aside by nearly anyone. For larger egress wells, we add a hinged escape hatch for ease of escape and for code compliance.
A grate is open by design, so rain and snow pass through while animals and large debris stay out. If you want weather protection along with the strength of a safety grate, we offer clear polycarbonate top covers that pair with it. Contact us, and we’ll walk you through the options.
