Window Well Extensions

Window well extensions add to your metal well’s height to accommodate changes in the grading around your home. Each extension is made from rust-resistant galvanized steel and helps rain drain away from your basement window instead of spilling into the well.

  • Window well extensions are made from rust-resistant galvanized steel.
  • Extensions are suitable for all metal window wells.
  • Small window wells include foundation vent wells, 24″ projection non-egress wells, semi-circle wells, and elongated wells.
  • Egress window wells include large egress compliant wells with a 36” projection.
  • Most wells carry a 30-year warranty.
  • Customers usually request extensions 12″ tall, which is also the minimum height.

Raise Your Metal Window Wells as the Grade Changes

Finding a well extension that fits your needs is more of an art than a science. If your size is not available, Window Well Experts will do its best to find the next closest size possible. The diagram in the gallery shows how the radius is determined on a window well, and the radius is very important when it comes to fit.

The photos show that most of the time the match will not be exact. Some people leave the gap, and others use caulking if the wells come close in size, since fit is not guaranteed. If your current well is showing signs of rust or other deterioration, the best course of action is to replace the entire well with a new steel window well.

Why And When Are Window Well Extensions Needed?

In short, window well extensions help water flow away from the building and keep your window wells above the landscape grade. They can help when correcting the grading around established homes.

When the ground settles around a building, topsoil is added in the low-lying areas. If there is an existing metal window well, an extension will help to keep the topsoil and other landscaping materials out of the window well. Proper grading is a critical component of a dry basement.

Extensions are necessary when the window well is not at least two inches above the landscape grade and the existing grade cannot be corrected. If the lip of your well sits less than 2″ above grade, a heavy rain can cause water to cascade into your window well because it is the lowest spot in your yard. An extension helps surface water drain away when installed properly, but it does not replace a subsurface drainage system if your basement has ongoing moisture problems.

Measure Your Existing Window Well

To help us get you the closest size window well extension possible, please see the measuring guide below. Measure the window well width from left to right on the outside of the well, not including the flanges attached to the wall, then the projection to the outside front of the well.

Extension Features and Specifications

Each window well extension is a shorter version of the metal window wells Window Well Experts has available for sale.

Galvanized Steel

Every extension is made from rust-resistant galvanized steel.

Outside Installation

Extensions are typically installed outside of an existing window well, which allows the grade to be raised at the foundation wall. Installing the extension on the outside of the existing well is a best practice to help avoid leaking at the overlap.

12" Height

Customers usually request extensions 12″ tall, and 12″ is the minimum height available. Be sure to have at least a 3-4” overlap in the ground of the existing well for the best results. If you are raising the grade more than 8”, order an 18” extension.

Wide Compatibility

Extensions can fit many basement well sizes on the market, including small window wells and egress window wells.

Hidden Joint

One of the decorative window well scenes can be used inside the well to hide the joint and make your living space more attractive.

30-Year Warranty

Most wells carry a 30-year warranty. Please see the warranty details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Any of the steel wells Window Well Experts offers are suitable for extensions, except for fiberglass/composite wells. Browse all metal window wells, or call 1-888-397-8116 to talk through other options.

A window well extension will not make a window well egress compliant. However, if the original well is egress-compliant, then the extension will be too. If you’re ordering a well for basement egress, check with your local building inspector and the State Egress Codes page to verify your code requirements, including whether a deeper well needs an egress ladder for emergency exit.

The well should sit at least 2″ to 3″ above grade, meaning the soil level around it. The well depth must also reach 8″ to 12″ below the lower sill of the basement window, and the well width must provide at least 2″ on either side of the window.

Use the diagram above and measure the width of your window well from side to side, and measure the projection from the foundation wall (i.e., not from the window). Having an overlap is ideal, so check that the 12″ minimum height will be enough when you consider how much you are raising the grade around the well.

An extension works well when your existing metal well is in good shape and only needs more height. If your current well is showing signs of rust or other deterioration, the best course of action is to replace the entire well with a new galvanized steel window well.
